Episode I
The dark side of web animations

In a quest for user-centred websites, a designer embarked on a journey.

Guided by his love for clean and simple design, he believed in the power of aesthetics that effortlessly guided users through a seamless online experience.

With a focus on UX design, analytics metrics, usability, and functionality, he sought to revolutionise the digital landscape. But in this vast virtual galaxy, the dark side of web design beckoned.

Recruiters and clients were enamoured by flashy visuals and mind-bending animations, and the designer found himself at a crossroads.

To compete, he reluctantly delved into the Dark power of CSS and JavaScript, using this art to create attention-grabbing spectacles.

Yet, his true passion remained unwavering.
Despite succumbing to the allure of this power, he never abandoned his dedication to substance over style.

He integrated analytics metrics, seeking to understand the intricacies of human-computer interaction. These insights informed his designs, creating experiences that resonated with users.

As time went on, the designer's focus on user-centric design shone through. His creations became a harmonious blend of captivating visuals and impeccable usability.

Clients and recruiters began to recognise the potency of his work, as he proved that true artistry lies in understanding the needs of users.

In this digital realm, where the dark side of CSS and JavaScript and flashy animations threatened to overpower design integrity, the user-centric design triumphed.

And now, as the digital landscape evolves and new challenges arise, we ask: Will you heed the call to create websites that prioritise user experience? Will you resist the allure of superficial tactics and strive for design excellence?

The choice is yours, as the next chapter of web design awaits its heroes...

Ok, now that I have your attention, let's talk about what really matter.

I know that design, creativity and animations play a crucial role in today's web development;

While visual appeal is undeniably important, it is crucial not to lose sight of the fundamental factors that drive a company's success and ensure its longevity in the online world.

"And what is it?" You might ask

First and foremost, content reigns supreme.

Regardless of how visually stunning a website or social media page may be, if the content lacks substance, relevance, or value, it will fail to engage and retain visitors.

A successful online presence hinges on delivering high-quality, meaningful content that caters to the needs and interests of your target audience.

By focusing on creating informative, entertaining, or insightful content, you can establish yourself as an authority in your industry and build trust with your customers.

User-friendly design is crucial.

Don't sacrifice usability for aesthetics.

Streamline navigation, ensure fast load times, and provide intuitive interfaces.

Enhance browsing experience to retain visitors and convert them into loyal customers.

SEO is vital.

Search engine optimisation is crucial for driving organic traffic to your website.

Optimise your content, improve performance, earn backlinks and build topical authority.

Boost visibility in search engine results driving organic traffic to your site that ultimately improves your chances of online success.

And the most IMPORTANT of them all.

Always keep your User Front and Center.
Users are the foundation of your business and the driving force behind its success.

By prioritising your user, you can better understand their needs, desires, and pain points.

This understanding enables you to tailor your products, services, and marketing efforts to effectively meet their expectations.

It allows you to continuously improve.

By gathering user data and conducting user research, you gain valuable insights into their preferences and behaviour.

This knowledge empowers you to make informed decisions, optimise your offerings, and enhance the overall user experience.

So, do we really need to use all this css, JS and animations?

Yes and No.
On one hand, consistent and attractive layouts, typography, and color schemes play a crucial role in creating a positive first impression and building trust with customers.

These elements contribute to the overall aesthetics and professionalism of the website.

On the other hand, the use of animation can bring interactivity and engagement to the website, making it more dynamic and memorable.

Thoughtfully applied animations can guide users' attention, provide feedback on interactions, and create a sense of delight and enjoyment.

Ultimately, the decision should be based on the specific needs and goals of the website.

It's important to strike a balance between functional design and captivating visual elements to create a successful user experience.

Let's not use design as a cover-up for poor UX.

For example:

Have you ever been on a website and found it hard to understand what the company does and how it can be useful to you?

You won't believe how many companies use super-complicated language to convey a simple message.

If you start thinking:
"I scrolled the whole land page and still don't know what they do and how they can help me..."

That's a problem.
Not to mention other important factors like:
Clear Hierarchy

Organise content in a logical and intuitive manner, ensuring easy navigation and efficient access to information.

Responsiveness

Design the website to adapt seamlessly to different devices and screen sizes, providing a consistent and user-friendly experience across desktop and mobile platforms.

Analytics

Implement analytics tools to gather insights on user behaviour, traffic sources, and engagement metrics. This data helps in understanding user preferences and making informed decisions for website optimisation.

Data Storage

Set up a secure and reliable storage system to store user data, such as user profiles, preferences, and transactional information. Compliance with data protection regulations is crucial.

Information Flow

Design a smooth and intuitive information flow, guiding users through the website to easily find the content they seek. Use clear headings, subheadings, and labels to aid comprehension and simplify navigation.

Sitemap

Create a sitemap that outlines the structure of your website, allowing users and search engines to understand the organisation of content and easily navigate through different pages.

Accessibility

Ensure that the website is accessible to users with disabilities by adhering to web accessibility standards. This includes providing alternative text for images, using readable fonts and colours, and enabling keyboard navigation.

Fast Load Times

Optimise the website's performance by minimising file sizes, utilising caching techniques, and leveraging content delivery networks (CDNs) to ensure quick page loading times.

Search Functionality

Implement a search feature to enable users to find specific information or products within your website efficiently. Make sure the search function provides relevant results and includes filters if necessary.

User Feedback

Include mechanisms for users to provide feedback, such as contact forms, surveys, or customer support channels. This allows users to communicate their needs, report issues, or ask questions, facilitating a positive user experience.

Clear Call-to-Action (CTA)

Place clear and strategically positioned CTAs throughout your website to guide users towards desired actions. Whether it's making a purchase, subscribing to a newsletter, or contacting you, CTAs help drive user engagement and conversion.

Mobile Optimisation

Optimise your website for mobile devices, as a significant portion of users access the internet through smartphones and tablets. Ensure that your website is fully responsive, loads quickly on mobile devices, and offers a seamless browsing experience.

Content Management System (CMS)

Use a CMS to easily update and manage your website's content. A CMS allows you to regularly publish fresh and relevant content, such as blog posts or news updates, keeping users informed and engaged.

Security Measures

Implement robust security measures to protect user data and provide a secure browsing experience. Use HTTPS encryption, regularly update software and plugins, and employ strong password policies to safeguard user information and build trust.

And Much More

That's why I prefer to keep my design simple.

Not because I lack the skills or creativity for making effects and animations.

But because the factors mentioned are fundamental to the success and effectiveness of a website.

And that's where my main focus is.
